Computing Resources for Faculty

Numerous engineering applications and computer support are available to the William States Lee College of Engineering through the OneIT ENGR College Support Team.  These resources and assistance are available to all College of Engineering members. OneIT is the central organization that manages the campus network, servers, disk storage, email, desktop computers and other computing services to UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff.

The ENGR Computing Support office is located in Smith 249. It provides walk-in and phone support for College of Engineering faculty, staff, and students.

Peer Evaluator

Peer Evaluator was developed to support team projects in the Freshman Engineering program. It allows the instructor to create teams of students who will provide peer evaluations of each other’s participation in a common project.

Using a web based interface, the instructor enters a set of evaluation questions for which students must provide either a numerical rating, a multiple choice response, or a free form comment for each of their teammates. The instructor also sets time periods during which the student evaluations may be entered and after which students may review their own evaluations. Students enter and review evaluations using a series of web forms. They may edit their evaluations up until the final due date. Once the students have entered their evaluations, the instructor may view their responses in online or save the responses in a format suitable for spreadsheet and database applications.

Web Homework (WebHW)

WebHW is a web based homework submission and return tool. It was originally developed to support the Freshman Engineering program.

WebHW provides instructors with a simple way to set up online submission, grading, and return of electronic homework materials. The students’ submissions are organized by both section number and assignment. The instructor sets dates for each assignment that specify when students may submit homework, whether or not late assignments are accepted, and when the homework will be available for review. Instructors are granted permissions to the homework storage area for each of their classes so that they may grade the assignments. If appropriate, instructor comments can be added as annotations in the submitted file; if not, a separate file of comments may be created for the student. Instructors may also add Teaching Assistants for each section. They will be granted access to the submitted assignments to assist with grading. The student interface is also entirely web based for both submission and return.

Research Computing

University Research Computing (URC) is one of several support groups within OneIT. The mission of this organization is to support the unique computing needs of UNC Charlotte’s community of researchers, including students by developing shared computing facilities and offering specialized services that would be difficult for individual research groups or departments to provide internally.
