College Named for William States Lee III
In 1994, the College was named for William States Lee III in recognition of his leadership in the energy sector and his contributions to engineering innovation in North Carolina.
Since its founding, the College has expanded programs, research capabilities, enrollment, and industry engagement. What began as a growing engineering program has become a comprehensive college supporting workforce needs across the region.

For more than 75 years, engineering at UNC Charlotte has been shaped by innovation, hands-on learning and a commitment to student success. From its beginnings at Charlotte College in 1946 to becoming the William States Lee College of Engineering, the college has grown alongside the region it serves, preparing generations of engineers, researchers and leaders. William States Lee III
William States Lee III was a respected leader in the energy industry and a champion of engineering innovation in North Carolina. In 1994, the College was named in his honor, recognizing his influence and commitment to advancing engineering and infrastructure development.
