Engineering FIT Program

Jumpstart your engineering journey with a week-long program focused on math readiness, campus connection and early success.

Want to get a head start on your engineering journey? The Engineering Forty-Niner Intensive Transition (FIT) program at UNC Charlotte is a dynamic, week-long experience designed to set you up for success before your first semester even begins. Tailored for students enrolling in College Algebra (MATH 1101) or Precalculus (MATH 1103), FIT helps you strengthen your math foundation while introducing you to the real-world problem-solving skills engineers use every day.

Arrive on campus early, move into your fall housing ahead of the crowd and jump into a supportive environment where you’ll connect with peers, faculty and mentors who are invested in your success. Through a 1-credit seminar, hands-on learning and guided support, you’ll build confidence in your math skills while learning how to navigate campus resources, academic support services and student involvement opportunities.

With dedicated peer mentorship and early exposure to the engineering community, FIT gives you more than a head start, it gives you a strong, connected foundation for your entire college experience.

The application for the Fall 2026 Cohort is now open

Engineering FIT is targeted for students who will be enrolled in College Algebra or Precalculus in their first semester. The program will provide you with a better understanding of the expectations of being an engineering student. It will also provide campus resources and networking opportunities so that you will know exactly what is expected of you as you establish contacts early in your college experience.

Engineering FIT benefits include:

Engineering FIT Costs

The only costs associated with Engineering FIT are Housing for the early move-in charge ($25/ night) and dining option plans. Those amounts will be added to your Fall bill, allowing students to use financial aid to cover those costs. However, there are no upfront out-of-pocket expenses for FIT.

Housing Information

Students admitted into the Engineering Forty-Niner Intensive Transition (FIT) program have the opportunity to move into their housing assignment early. A $25 per night charge is billed to the student’s Fall Housing Cost. Because standard student move-in dates vary based on location, the average amount students can expect is $125 for the duration of FIT; however, Housing and Residence Life will determine the final amount.

Students are encouraged to go through the normal housing application process and indicate FIT participation as soon as possible.

Dining Information

The University offers an optional $100 declining balance package for students that can be used during the mini-fall term for FIT before the standard fall meal plan begins. This option gives FIT students early access to a variety of dining options, including:

After submitting your FIT application, detailed dining information will be sent to your email inbox on July 12.

Before You Arrive

We encourage all FIT participants to complete their housing application before July 1, register for your cohort course and log on to Canvas and access your Engineering FIT course (available in August).
