Lab Safety: Rules You Must Follow
Safety is the top priority in all engineering labs. Compliance with training and procedures is required.
- Complete all required safety training before using any lab space or equipment
- Wear appropriate attire: closed-toe shoes, long pants, and safety glasses (as required)
- Avoid loose clothing, jewelry, and unsecured long hair
- Never eat, drink, or store food in lab spaces
- Never work alone in a lab
- Do not use equipment without proper training or authorization
- Follow all lockout/tagout and disposal procedures
- Report injuries, spills, or equipment issues immediately
- Know the location of emergency equipment (eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, first aid kits)
Failure to follow safety protocols may result in removal from the lab and academic consequences.
Lab Access & Equipment Use
Engineering lab equipment is specialized, costly and often hazardous if used incorrectly.
- Use of equipment requires training and authorization
- Do not bypass safety systems or modify equipment
- Follow all sign-in and badge access procedures where required
- Access to labs outside scheduled class times may require permission
- Treat all equipment with care and clean up after use
- Report damage or issues immediately
What to Expect in Lab Courses
Lab courses combine hands-on learning with analysis, writing and teamwork.
- Meet 1–2 times per week for extended lab sessions
- Work individually or in teams depending on the course
- Complete pre-lab preparation before each session
- Submit pre-lab assignments, in-lab work, and post-lab reports
- Expect lab reports to be a major part of your grade
- Plan extra time outside of class for analysis and report writing
Materials & Lab Fees
Some courses require additional materials or fees beyond tuition.
