Who Is My Advisor?
First-year engineering students are advised through the College of Engineering's Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS). After completing the first-year engineering curriculum, students transition to a departmental academic advisor. Transfer and second-degree students are advised directly within the department. All other students are advised by the School of Energy advisors.

Advising Expectations
Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor regularly throughout their academic career. In addition to required advising periods, you should connect with your advisor when:
- You have questions about degree requirements or course selection.
- You are considering a change to your academic plan.
- You are experiencing academic challenges.
- You receive an academic warning or are concerned about your academic performance.
- You need assistance understanding university policies, procedures, or available resources.
Registration Advising
Students are encouraged to participate in advising each semester before registering for classes. Advising helps ensure you remain on track toward degree completion and provides an opportunity to discuss academic progress, course selection, and future goals.

Successful advising depends on active student participation. Students are expected to:
- Understand their degree requirements and graduation expectations.
- Review course options and prepare questions before advising appointments.
- Monitor academic progress, GPA, and earned credit hours.
- Stay informed about university deadlines and academic policies.
- Regularly check their Charlotte email account for important communications.
- Schedule and attend advising appointments as needed.
- Maintain copies of important academic records and planning documents.
- Keep personal and contact information current.
Change of Majors
Thinking about changing your major to Engineering Technology? Current Charlotte students are encouraged to explore the admission requirements for their intended program and meet with a departmental advisor to discuss eligibility, academic planning and the steps involved in the change-of-major process before submitting a request. Before submitting a Change of Major request, review the eligibility requirements for your desired Engineering Technology program below.
How to Change Your Major
- Review the admission requirements for your intended Engineering Technology program.
- Confirm that you meet the minimum GPA and course requirements.
- Submit the Change of Major Form.
- The department will review your request and notify you of the decision.
Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to a program. Admission decisions are based on departmental review and available capacity.
Program Requirements
Mechanical Engineering Technology
Students must:
- Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.20.
- Complete the required mathematics and science prerequisites with grades of C or better.
- Meet course attempt requirements.
- Successfully complete at least one approved Mechanical Engineering Technology course.
Electromechanical Engineering Technology
Students must:
- Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.20.
- Complete the required mathematics and science prerequisites with grades of C or better.
- Meet course attempt requirements.
