Advising Process Frequently Asked Questions
All first-year students in the William States Lee College of Engineering, including Early College and dual-enrolled students, are advised through the Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS).
OSDS advisors support your transition to UNC Charlotte and your start in engineering, engineering technology or construction management. They help you build a strong academic foundation, understand progression requirements and plan your courses toward your intended major.
After completing the first-year curriculum and meeting progression requirements, students transition to their academic department for continued advising within their major.
Where is the Advising Office Located for First-Year Students?
OSDS is on the second floor of Smith Hall located in room 228. Schedule an appointment with your advisor as well as see drop-in availability.
When is advising for next semester’s registration?
Preregistration advising for Spring classes begins in October after Unsatisfactory Midterm Grades notices are emailed to students.
Preregistration advising for Fall classes begins in March after Unsatisfactory Midterm Grades notices are emailed to students.
Preregistration advising for Summer classes begins in March (same time as fall pre-registration advising) after Unsatisfactory Midterm Grades notices are emailed to students.

Why is there an advising hold each semester?
Advising holds are placed on students’ Banner account to restrict students from enrolling in classes. Each semester, you are expected to develop a schedule of classes for the next semester and have your major advisor review for approval.
The advising hold is there to ensure that your major advisor has approved your planned schedule. You will be able to see the advising hold dates on your Banner account. The hold will not impact your current courses. The advising hold is not active until the first day of registration. The hold will be lifted when your major advisor has approved your schedule.
Are there requirements to complete before the registration period?
In addition to preparing a schedule of classes for your major advisor to review, there are other pre-registration advising requirements stated in the LCOE Advising Canvas module that must be completed before the advising hold is lifted. The module covers University and College policies and agreements.
I’m not sure who my advisor is.
Students can view their advisor on Connect. For pre-registration advising, students advised in OSDS must complete pre-registration advising requirements in order to have their hold lifted. Additional details regarding these requirements are communicated via email each term. Students are invited to utilize drop-in advising or schedule a meeting with their primary advisor for assistance as needed. More information on this can be found on the Advising Hours page.
