Professional Development

Professional development in engineering is about turning your skills into real-world impact. Through internships, co-ops, industry connections and career planning support, you’ll gain hands-on experience and explore what engineers actually do across different fields. From career fairs and networking events to guidance on licensure and long-term planning, you’ll have opportunities to build your experience and prepare for what’s next.

Join Professional Organizations

Join Professional Organizations Professional engineering societies (ASME, IEEE, ASCE, AIChE, etc.) offer student memberships that connect you with practicing engineers, industry conferences, technical publications and career development resources. Membership looks good on resumes, gives you access to mentorship and networking opportunities and helps you stay current with developments in your field. Most departments have student chapters that host meetings, workshops and social events throughout the year.
