What MAPS Helps Students Do

MAPS helps students build the habits and skills needed to succeed in engineering, including:

  • Adjusting to college-level coursework and expectations
  • Developing effective study and exam strategies
  • Managing time and academic workload
  • Building confidence and independence
  • Exploring professional development and career readiness

How MAPS Works

Students participate in structured, peer-led coaching:

  • 10 Weekly one-hour coaching sessions
  • 10 student participate per session led by trained engineering students
  • Discussion-based learning focused on real student challenges
  • Optional activities outside of class (workshops, networking, etc.)

Coaches guide students through academic strategies, campus resources and professional development topics in a supportive environment.

Why Maps Exist

Engineering students often face a challenging transition into college and the MAPS program is designed to support them through that journey. MAPS helps students succeed academically, build meaningful connections within the College of Engineering and develop the long-term learning and problem-solving skills essential for their future careers. Through this support, students grow into more independent, confident learners who are better prepared to thrive in their academic and professional paths.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there homework or graded assignments?

No. However, participation on assignments and discussions during the sessions will reflect on your attendance.

How will MAPS affect my GPA?

Students who regularly attend MAPS sessions are more likely to achieve a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher compared to students who do not attend.

Will MAPS still benefit me as a sophomore, junior, senior, or transfer student?

Yes, definitely. The curriculum for all of the topics covered during sessions is designed to aid students as they transition into the Lee College of Engineering regardless of where they are in their respective programs.

Both fall and spring semesters cover academic success and professional development strategies specific to the needs of engineering students that will carry forward into their future professional careers.
