Departmental Advising

Academic advising in Electrical and Computer Engineering supports students throughout their academic journey, from understanding degree requirements to planning for graduation and professional success. Students are encouraged to engage regularly with their assigned advisor and faculty mentors to stay on track, explore opportunities and make informed academic decisions.

Advising is a collaborative process that helps students navigate curriculum requirements, registration planning, and academic policies while also connecting them to resources that support long-term success in engineering.

Who Is My Advisor?

First-year engineering students are advised through the College of Engineering’s Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS). After completing the first-year engineering curriculum, students transition to a departmental academic advisor. Transfer and second-degree students are advised directly within the department.

Academic Plans of Study

Academic Plans of Study provide a semester-by-semester roadmap to help you stay on track toward degree completion. These plans outline the recommended sequence of courses for your major, including key prerequisites and general education requirements, while allowing flexibility based on your academic background and progress. Used in partnership with academic advising, they help you plan each term with confidence, understand your degree requirements and make informed decisions as you move toward graduation.

How Advising Works

ECE advising includes both scheduled and on-demand support throughout the academic year. Appointments are scheduled through the university’s advising system (Connect) or through advisor office hours.

Pre-Registration Advising (Required)

Each semester, students must complete advising requirements before their registration hold is lifted. This typically includes submitting an updated academic plan and completing any required departmental steps prior to enrollment.

Ongoing Support (Year-Round)

Students are encouraged to reach out outside of registration periods for help with:

  • Course planning and degree progress
  • Academic challenges or concerns
  • Policy or progression questions
  • Withdrawal or repeat course guidance
  • Exploring electives, concentrations, or minors

Student Responsibilities

To make advising effective, students are expected to take an active role in their academic planning by:

  • Understanding degree and progression requirements for their major
  • Reviewing curriculum requirements before each registration cycle
  • Completing all required advising steps each semester
  • Monitoring academic performance and GPA
  • Staying aware of university deadlines and policies
  • Regularly checking their UNC Charlotte email
  • Preparing questions and materials before advising meetings
  • Keeping personal and academic records up to date
