Changing your major is an important decision, and we’re here to help. Whether you’re already a College of Engineering student, interested in transferring into engineering from another college at Charlotte or considering a major outside the College of Engineering, this page will guide you through the process. You’ll find information about advising, eligibility requirements, first-year course planning and the resources available to help you successfully transition to your new academic path.

Current Engineering Students

If you are currently enrolled in the William States Lee College of Engineering, the process depends on who advises you.

Students Advised by the Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS)

First-year students who are considering changing to another engineering, engineering technology, or construction management major should attend a Change of Major Workshop before submitting a request.

Students Advised by Their Academic Department

If you are advised by your academic department and would like to change to another College of Engineering major, review the admission requirements and change-of-major process for your intended major.

Explore Our Deparments

If you plan to change to a major outside the College of Engineering, contact the department offering your intended major or the University Advising Center for instructions on completing the change of major process.

Students Outside the College of Engineering

If you are interested in declaring an engineering, engineering technology or construction management major, begin by identifying your current advising office.

Students Advised by University College

If you are currently advised by University College (including students with a Meta-Major designation), continue working with your assigned advisor while completing the requirements for your intended engineering major.

University College Advising

Students Advised by Another Academic College

If you are currently majoring in another academic college (such as Business, Liberal Arts & Sciences, or Health & Human Services), submit a Transition Advising Request to connect with the College of Engineering.

Transition Advising helps students understand admission requirements, course planning, and the steps needed before declaring an engineering major.

Eligibility to Declare an Engineering Major

Before declaring a major in the William States Lee College of Engineering, you must meet the following requirements.

Complete the Required First-Year Curriculum

Complete the required first-year coursework for your intended major.

Course Attempt Policy: Students may have no more than two attempts for any required course. A withdrawal (W) counts as an attempt.

Preparing to Declare an Engineering Major

While working toward eligibility, you should:

Continue meeting with your current academic advisor.
Focus on earning strong grades in courses required for your intended engineering major.
Request access to first-year engineering courses when eligible.
Wait until you have officially declared your engineering major before enrolling in sophomore-level engineering courses.
Review the admission requirements for your intended major before submitting a declaration request

Note: Construction Management and Fire & Safety Engineering Technology students should contact their department regarding first-year course access and requirements.

Students transferring into the College of Engineering from another college at Charlotte
Students transferring out of the College of Engineering
Continuing students who are not advised by University College
