Who Is My Advisor in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science?
First-year engineering students are advised through the College of Engineering’s Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS). After completing the first-year engineering curriculum, students transition to a departmental academic advisor. Transfer and second-degree students are advised directly within the department.
Students can view their assigned advisor and schedule appointments through CONNECT.

Pre-Registration Advising Requirements
All William States Lee College of Engineering students must complete pre-registration advising each semester before registering for classes. An advising hold is placed on student accounts and will be removed once all required advising activities have been completed.

Seniors
Students with approximately 90 or more earned credit hours and enrolled in MEGR 3255, MEGR 3355, MEGR 3455 or MEGR 3275, are encouraged to review their DegreeWorks audit with an academic advisor to ensure they remain on track for graduation and to complete their advising requirements.
Graduating Students
Students who expect to graduate during the current semester are exempt from the pre-registration advising requirement. However, they are encouraged to meet with an advisor if they have questions about graduation requirements or commencement.
Important Deadlines
Students must complete all advising requirements within the timeframe outlined each semester in advising announcements. Failure to do so may delay registration.

Academic Plans of Study | Check Sheets
Academic Plans of Study provide a semester-by-semester roadmap to help you stay on track toward degree completion. These plans outline the recommended sequence of courses for your major, including key prerequisites and general education requirements, while allowing flexibility based on your academic background and progress. Used in partnership with academic advising, they help you plan each term with confidence, understand your degree requirements and make informed decisions as you move toward graduation.

Students who are seeking eligibility for a change of major:
Should continue to be advised by their current advisor.
Should focus on successfully completing courses that count towards the program of interest and not rely on grades in unrelated courses to elevate the GPA.
Are not permitted to enroll in sophomore engineering courses.

First-Year Requirements for students who started in Spring 2025 or before Spring 2025
Students who are seeking eligibility for a change of major:
Should continue to be advised by their current advisor.
Should focus on successfully completing courses that count towards the program of interest and not rely on grades in unrelated courses to elevate the GPA.
Are not permitted to enroll in sophomore engineering courses.
May request authorization to enroll in ENGR 1202 via a UCOL advisor, or if not in UCOL via a request to meesadvisor@charlotte.edu. **Please note, the last semester we are planning on offering ENGR 1202-M will be for Spring 2026.
Courses in the first-year MEGR curriculum are: ENGR 1201, ENGR 120-M, CHEM 1251, CHEM 1251L, PHYS 2101, PHYS 2101L, MATH 1241, MATH 1242, Theme Course 1 (or LBST 110X), WRDS 1103 or 1104, Science Elective, Theme Course 2 (or LBST 210X, 2301 or 221X*)
*LBSTs are for students who are in the catalog year 2022-2023 and prior. Students in the 2023-2024 catalog year and onward will take the Theme Courses.
Options for the science elective are: BIOL 1110, CHEM 1252, GEOL 1200 or PHYS 1130.

Visiting Students
Apply to be a visiting student at UNC Charlotte by completing the application process outlined by Academic Affairs.
Begin your planning by exploring your home institution’s course equivalencies to ensure you request the correct course to receive credit. Also, explore the course catalog for descriptions.
Accepted Summer Visiting Students wishing to enroll in any engineering course must obtain authorization by emailing meesadvisor@charlotte.edu for assistance.
All non-engineering and visiting authorization requests will be reviewed and processed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Science Associate Chair for Undergraduate Programs, Dr. Kevin Lawton (kmlawton@charlotte.edu).
