Students majoring in Construction Management and Fire and Safety Engineering Technology will not follow the CFY curriculum. Instead, these students will take major-specific first-year courses taught by dedicated faculty within the Construction Management and Fire and Safety Engineering Technology programs, providing an immediate focus on their chosen field.
These CFY courses (for most engineering and technology majors) will provide you with a solid base upon which to build your specialized engineering knowledge in the years to come. These foundational courses include:
ENGR 1300 – Exploring Engineering and Technology with Success
Welcomes students with a diverse cross-section of backgrounds into the engineering college/profession with a variety of hands-on experiences that informs them of the different engineering careers/disciplines and offers them an opportunity to apply the engineering design process to meaningful, real-world projects. Students will further develop learning efficacy while discovering their passion, and finding meaningful connections in the engineering community.
ENGR 1301 – Foundations of Math and Science for Engineers
The course lays a solid foundation of math and science for underlying engineering courses. Focuses on developing critical thinking skills along with providing hands-on practical experiences. Focus areas include dimensional analysis, atomic structure, properties of matter, chemical bonding, vectors, vector algebra, derivatives, Newton’s Laws, thermodynamics, etc. Lectures, breakout practice/lab and project sessions.
ENGR 1302 – Logic and Computational Problem-Solving
An immersive project-oriented course where students explore real-world engineering problems, develop methodologies for solving problems logically and with computational tools, and validate solutions. A modern programming language (Python) is introduced.
ENGR 1303 – Engineering Visualization and Graphical Communication
Develop foundational knowledge and skills to effectively visualize and communicate complex three-dimensional designs and data sets. Through hands-on and practical applications, students learn techniques and tools to create visual spatial representations and conduct data analysis that aids in decision-making. Online 2D and 3D applications will be used, as well as spreadsheets and mathematical analysis software.
First-Year Course Updates
Students Beginning Fall 2025:
Current students will remain on their existing catalog, but with the launch of the CFY Curriculum in Fall 2025, some courses from the previous curriculum will no longer be offered. No need to worry—substitutions have been planned to ensure a smooth transition for current students.
First-Year Courses Update:
For students whose catalog year is 2024-2025 or older:
- ENGR 1201 will no longer be offered after Summer 2025.
- Students who still need ENGR 1201 should plan to take ENGR 1300 as a substitution
- ENGR 1202 will be available for Mechanical Engineering students in Spring 2026.
- Civil, Environmental, and Systems Engineering students needing ENGR 1202 must take ENGR 1302 as a substitution
- All Computer and Electrical Engineering students have been transitioned to the 2025-2026 catalog, thus are no longer required to complete ENGR 1202 if they haven’t already done so. Computer and Electrical Engineering majors who have completed ENGR 1202 have had the course substituted in for a requirement on the new curriculum.
