Your Academic Advisor is a full-time professional in the Albert School of Construction dedicated to guiding you through your academics at UNC Charlotte. Through an interactive partnership, they help you develop a personalized plan of study based on your prior preparation and long-term educational goals. In addition to routine course planning, contact them immediately if you receive an unsatisfactory grade report, face pending disciplinary action or experience personal difficulties affecting your progress. They offer a wealth of information, understand university procedures, and can connect you with the right contacts to resolve any academic issues.
Your Program Director serves as your primary faculty contact for specialized academic and professional guidance. They are your main resource for program-specific course selection, career planning, and finding internships or research opportunities. Who Is My Advisor in the Albert School of Construction?
First-year engineering students are advised through the College of Engineering's Office of Student Development and Success (OSDS). After completing the first-year engineering curriculum, students transition to a departmental academic advisor. Transfer and second-degree students are also advised directly within the department. Your advisor can also be found in Banner Self-Service which is accessed through My UNC Charlotte.
Academic Plans of Study | Check Sheets
Academic Plans of Study provide a semester-by-semester roadmap to help you stay on track toward degree completion. These plans outline the recommended sequence of courses for your major, including key prerequisites and general education requirements, while allowing flexibility based on your academic background and progress. Used in partnership with academic advising, they help you plan each term with confidence, understand your degree requirements and make informed decisions as you move toward graduation.
You are required to update your Academic Plan/ Check-sheet and complete the quizzes on Canvas each semester prior to registering for classes. Advisors communicate through your UNC Charlotte email account, so check regularly for important announcements. Students who do not attend scheduled advising sessions may not be able to register for classes as early as their classmates.

While the Academic Advisor is there to help, you must also accept the following responsibilities:
- Pre-registration advising is mandatory for all William States Lee College of Engineering students. Students advised by staff in the Albert School of Construction are required to complete pre-registration tasks on Canvas each semester. Individual appointments with Advisors are available through Connect.
- Be proactive and seek help and advice early in the semester
- Understand the role of Academic Advisors
- Know how to contact your advisor(s) – Use Connect to schedule appointments
- Become familiar with requirements for your major, minor, general education and graduation
- Know how to reference the Undergraduate Course Catalog for degree requirements, College policies, and course descriptions
- Update your student record when necessary (e.g., change of address, phone number, etc.)
- Know your current grade point average, enrolled credits, and earned credit hours
- Follow dates and deadlines on the academic calendar (add/drop, withdrawal, and graduation)
- Be aware of all University policies and procedures regarding academic forms, probation/suspension, etc.
- Know that official communication is done through university (charlotte.edu) student email
- Know that advisors are helpful and available during non-registration periods
- Schedule and arrive on time for appointments with your advisor
- Prepare questions and a course schedule before meeting with your advisor
- Make notes and keep all paperwork and forms from advising sessions
