Pre-Registration Advising

All undergraduate engineering students are required to complete pre-registration advising before their registration window opens each fall and spring semester. This process helps ensure you’re registering for the right courses in the correct sequence so you can stay on track for graduation. Your registration hold will remain in place until all advising requirements are complete.

What you'll need to do

Your advising requirements may vary depending on your academic standing (first-year, declared major, and math placement), but all students are required to:

  • Complete the required modules in the W.S. Lee College of Engineering Pre-Registration Advising Canvas Course.
  • Review your Academic Plan of Study to plan your upcoming semester and confirm you’re following the recommended course sequence.
  • Complete any additional advising requirements based on your classification or math level.

Who to see for pre-registration

First-Year Students
If you’re in the Common First Year, complete pre-registration advising with OSDS through drop-in hours, scheduled appointments or the online pre-registration process
First-Year Experience
Major-Declared Students
Once you’ve declared your major, complete pre-registration advising with your department advisor following your department’s specific procedures and deadlines

Holds

Financial Holds

Holds on your account prevent you from registering in upcoming terms. These holds include advising holds and financial holds. Advisors can only lift advising holds. Pre-registration advising requirements must be completed before the advising hold is lifted.

Registration

Students receive a scheduled registration time based on the completed/earned (not failed, withdrawn, or incomplete) credit hours, which doesn’t include credit hours currently in progress.

How Do I

Advising Modules in Canvas

All students advised in OSDS are enrolled in the W.S. Lee College of Engineering Pre-Registration Advising Course on Canvas. We want all students prepared for registration; therefore, students are responsible for the following before the advising hold is lifted:

  • REVIEW all module material
  • REQUIRED: Completing five short Comprehension Checks
  • REQUIRED: Submitting upcoming course plan

Changing or Ready to Declare a Major?

Students advised in OSDS will use the College of Engineering Change of Major form to declare a major. Choosing a major appropriate for a student’s interests, aptitudes, and career goals is a crucial decision during a student’s academic career.

Advising Options During Peak Times

During peak advising periods (October-November and March–April), appointment availability is limited due to high demand. Students are encouraged to check regularly for openings or use drop-in hours when available. Please note that advising availability is reduced in summer due to advisor involvement in Orientation programs.
